Abstract

The objective of this article is to understand, in part, the historical context of the formation of the collections currently maintained by the Department of Biology of the National Polytechnic School, as well as analyzing the reason that originated the division of its collections in the past and the use that is currently given to them. It also seeks to argue the role of universities and public and private institutions in the conservation and dissemination of this natural and cultural heritage, considered as true legacies of natural and historical knowledge of our country. It also seeks to identify potentialities and challenges involved in the adequate management of biological collections, achieving a better interaction between the public and the collections, strengthening their existence and exploring new applications in different sectors of society. The bibliographical research, the interviews with curators and finally the review of the repository of the collections of the Department of Biology of the National Polytechnic School, have allowed us to have a panoramic and systematic vision of the problem and to know the possible reasons for the division of these collections.
