This article show the results of the study entitled “Cultural identity of Soto province and Vélez province in department of Santander” research by Karina Archila as degree work, with problem question ¿which communicative actions strengths the cultural identity and traditions in Soto and Velez provinces? The general objective was to do a comparative study about the roots of the cultural identity in habitants of the named provinces in Santander, Colombia. As specific objectives: to identify the knowledge about the elements that conform the cultural identity of the habitants from mentioned provinces; to characterize the cultural practices that exist in that provinces and the intervention the mayors and Houses of Culture do for visibility; to state everyday events of the habitants from Soto and Velez provinces as soon as the performance of human behaviors and traditional characteristics roots at santanderean culture. The Phenomenological method was used for developed the study with a mixed research approach; the survey, interview and field journal were used as instruments to collect data. Some of the results show they both provinces attach great importance to cultural identity but in Vélez province it is much more rooted because el veleño is convinced of his identity and teach those values to his children, this tradition has been transmitted from generation to generation since the colonial era.
